CrossLink

IDS Project was awarded a National Leadership Grant by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to develop CrossLink, a middleware solution that allows for broader interoperability between cataloging and resource sharing systems. Leveraging the ISO 18626 standard, the software consists of three key pieces of infrastructure:

  • A shared index of holdings for the group of libraries wishing to share resources.
  • A directory of services and configuration data to furnish access information and necessary parameters to guide the choice of, and access to, potential suppliers.
  • A borrowing and lending broker, serving as the business logic for handling requests.

As some vendors in the resource sharing space remain reluctant to meaningfully collaborate with other software providers in the realization of true interoperability, CrossLink demonstrates significant potential in delivering what libraries have long asked for: a reliable way for interlibrary loan systems to speak to one another.
