HathiTrust Resource Sharing Service

HathiTrust recently announced a pilot project to explore offering a resource sharing service to its members. Through this service, participating libraries would be able to lend short portions of digitized works from titles that are held in their local print collections. HathiTrust is scoping this service through the lens of the Copyright Act - Sections 108(d), (g), and (i) and is collaborating with member ILL practitioners to develop this service.

Project LEND

University of California Davis (UC Davis) received a Mellon Foundation grant for a two-year initiative titled Project LEND (Library Expansion of Networked Delivery). Launched in 2023, the project aimed to explore the feasibility of legally expanding access to digitized books owned by academic and research libraries. The study investigated four research areas including user requirements, legal frameworks, technology requirements, and collections scope. In 2025, UC Davis released the user research findings and service plan from the study which identified a number of potential actions for libraries, publishers, and distributors to take in collaborative effort to broaden access to these digitized resources.
